It came back facing one direction only.

Short version, because you probably typed this between two other things. PayPal works in Nigeria now, in the direction of money coming in. Since 27 Jan 2026 you can link your PayPal account to a Paga wallet, receive payments from clients abroad, and take the money as Naira. What you still cannot do is put Naira into a PayPal balance, push anything from Paga back into PayPal, or hold the account your client in Berlin holds.

So the twenty-year wait ended, in the one direction that mattered most. It is also the narrowest possible version of coming back, and the gap between "PayPal is live in Nigeria" and what you get when you open the app is where this year's disappointment has come from. This post is that gap, measured.

What it covers: what changed in Jan, what did not change at all, what getting paid this way takes out of your money, and what plenty of Nigerian freelancers are doing instead.

Contents

Toggle

Does PayPal Work in Nigeria in 2026?

What PayPal in Nigeria Still Does Not Do

What It Costs to Get Paid Through PayPal

How to Get Paid From Abroad Without PayPal

But My Client Will Only Pay PayPal

You Were Never Trying to Get Into PayPal

Get Paid From Abroad Without Asking Anybody

Does PayPal Work in Nigeria in 2026?

Yes, inward. Paga announced the integration on 27 Jan 2026 and the shape of it is this: you connect your PayPal account to your Paga wallet, your PayPal balance shows up inside the Paga app, and from there the money becomes Naira you can spend on bills, move to a bank account, or put on Paga's card. If you have a client who has heard of exactly one payment method in their entire working life, that is a real door where there was none.

I keep picturing the shop at the end of my street. Shutters down since I was in secondary school, nobody ever answering, then one morning somebody cuts a slot in the metal so you can post things in. Useful! Genuinely. But you still cannot walk in, you cannot take anything back out, and the man inside decides what he admits to receiving.

What PayPal in Nigeria Still Does Not Do

Three things, and they are the three everybody assumes got fixed. You cannot fund a PayPal balance with Naira. You cannot send money from Paga back into PayPal, so the route runs one way by design. And a Nigerian personal account on its own is the same send-only account it has been since 2004; the receiving works because Paga is standing in the middle of it, not because the account changed.

Then there is the old wahala, which also did not go anywhere. In the days after the announcement, Technext collected a run of them: one user restricted after testing with a single dollar, another banned outright for uploading verification documents.* That is the part that should decide it for you. A charge you can calculate is a business expense. An account that can freeze with your whole month inside it is not a payment method.

What It Costs to Get Paid Through PayPal

Layers, which is exactly why it is hard to feel. Technext's round-up puts the currency conversion charge at up to 4% and the international transaction charge at up to 5%.* Then the money still has to become Naira, which carries its own spread wherever you do that. Nobody sends a bill for any of it. It simply arrives as a smaller number than the one your client typed.

Run that on a $500 invoice once and you will remember it. A handful of percent is a tank of fuel and a bag of rice, and neither of them appeared on any receipt 😭

How to Get Paid From Abroad Without PayPal

What quietly replaced PayPal here is not another PayPal. It is stablecoins: your client sends you USDT or USDC, both pegged to the Dollar, and it reaches you in minutes without passing a single institution that holds an opinion about where you live. Your client needs no account with anybody Nigerian, and you need nobody's permission to receive it.

On Mular it goes like this. Open your free USDT or USDC account on Mular, send your client the wallet address the way you would send account details, and the payment lands there with nothing taken off it by Mular on the way in.** From that balance you pay people directly: a landlord's bank account, your data, your sister in Abeokuta. Naira reaches the account in about ten seconds and the withdrawal fee is ₦50.** Nobody on the receiving end ever hears the word stablecoin.

And the chore you are supposed to do before agreeing any price, which is check what a Dollar is worth today, is one page rather than a group chat argument. The USD to Naira page carries the live rate, and Mular shows you the Naira figure before you confirm anything, so the arithmetic is done before you ever agree to it.

If invoicing is the part that trips you up, we wrote crypto invoicing for freelancers up properly, and getting paid in crypto end to end if the idea is new to you.

But My Client Will Only Pay PayPal

Some genuinely will, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Agencies with a finance team and a form, older clients, anybody whose accountant has exactly one approved method. For those, set up the Paga route and use it, because a narrow door beats a locked one, and Paga spent thirteen years asking for this door while the rest of us complained on Twitter. If you are still at the stage of opening an account at all, we have that post too. Just do not leave a balance sitting in there that you would miss.

You Were Never Trying to Get Into PayPal

You were trying to get paid. That is the whole thing, and it got lost somewhere in twenty years of asking nicely. The slot in the shutter is good news and I am glad it is there, but a slot in a shutter is still somebody else's shop, open on somebody else's terms. The money your client sends can land somewhere that holds no opinion about your passport.

Get Paid From Abroad Without Asking Anybody

Mular gives you free USDT and USDC accounts, eight other coins and a Naira balance, all in one app. Your client sends to your address, you pay your people straight out of that balance, and Naira reaches a Nigerian bank account in about ten seconds for ₦50.** No slot, no shutter, no twenty-year wait for somebody to answer the door.

Download Mular and send your next client an address instead of an apology.

As always, stay Jiggy.
Love, Mr Mular.

* PayPal's reported charges and the account restrictions users posted after the announcement come from Technext, read 13 Oct 2026: https://technext24.com/2026/01/28/paypal-still-blacklisting-nigerians/

** Mular fees as at 13 Oct 2026: nothing to receive USDT or USDC into your wallet, and a ₦50 withdrawal fee when Naira goes to a Nigerian bank account.
