No Nigerian bank account holds Naira, Dollars, Pounds and Euros next to each other the way the adverts abroad suggest. What exists here is the domiciliary account: a foreign currency account at your Nigerian bank, opened one currency at a time, beside the Naira account you already have.

Whether you need one comes down to which direction your money travels. If it arrives from clients abroad and leaves as Naira (rent, school fees, data, a transfer to your mum), then probably not. If it has to leave the country in your own name, to a university in Leeds or a supplier in Guangzhou, then yes, and nothing else does that job as cleanly. What follows is what the account is, what opening one takes, what changed in Jun 2026, and the question that settles it.

Contents

Toggle

What a Multi-Currency Account Actually Means in Nigeria

What It Takes to Open One

What Changed for Dollar Accounts in 2026

So Do You Actually Need One?

Where Your Dollars Can Sit Instead

The Case for Keeping One Anyway

You Never Wanted Three SIMs

Hold Dollars, Pay in Naira, Skip the Referee Forms

What a Multi-Currency Account Actually Means in Nigeria

Abroad, the phrase means one account with several currency balances stacked inside it and a single app on top. Here, the nearest real thing is the domiciliary account, which Nigerian banks have offered for years in Dollars, Pounds and Euros: you receive foreign currency into it, keep it there, wire it out, and spend it on a card where your bank issues one.

The "multi" is doing a lot of work, mind you. Each currency is its own account with its own number and its own paperwork, and your Naira account carries on separately beside them. One banking app showing three balances is not the same animal as one account holding three currencies.

What It Takes to Open One

More than you remember. The last time Nairametrics wrote the list out, it ran to two referees who already bank at that branch, a valid ID, a passport photograph, a utility bill from the last three months and an existing Naira account there. We walked the whole thing through in how to open a dollar account in Nigeria, so I will not repeat it here. None of it is unreasonable for an account holding foreign currency; it is simply slower than what you are quietly comparing it to, which is an app you downloaded on a Tuesday and were using by Tuesday afternoon.

What Changed for Dollar Accounts in 2026

Genuinely good news here, and it is recent. Under the CBN's Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, ordinary domiciliary holders got what BusinessDay reported as "unfettered and unrestricted access" to their own balances, no prior approval needed, plus telegraphic transfers of up to $10,000 a day.* Form A, the paperwork that used to sit in front of a personal transfer out, is gone where the account funded itself. That matters, because the fear most people still carry here is a 2020 fear: money goes in, and somebody else decides when it comes out. The rules now read very differently.

So Do You Actually Need One?

Think back to when everybody carried three SIMs. One for MTN because your family was on MTN, one for Glo because Glo had data, one for Airtel because the other two vanished the moment you passed Berger. (I carried all three, and I can still tell you which trouser pocket the Glo line lived in.) Nobody wanted three lines. They wanted one line that worked everywhere, and until that existed the three SIMs were a workaround we all pretended was a feature.

A multi-currency account is the same shape of answer, so ask a better question than "is a dollar account good". Ask what you are actually trying to do with Dollars. Open one if money leaves the country in your own name: school fees, medical bills abroad, a supplier who invoices in Dollars. For that, a bank account with a SWIFT code and a branch you can shout at is worth every referee form.

If what you do is receive money from abroad and spend it here, the dom account quietly becomes a holding pen. The money lands, sits, and has to be moved somewhere useful before it buys anything, because your landlord and Eko Electric both want Naira.

Where Your Dollars Can Sit Instead

On Mular, those balances live in one app. You hold Dollars as USDT or USDC, or in your USD balance, beside Naira and whatever BTC, SOL, XRP or other coins you keep there, and funding a USDT or USDC wallet costs nothing.** Your client sends to the address the way they would send to account details.

Then you pay people straight out of it. A landlord's bank account, your sister in Abeokuta, the carpenter waiting since August: Naira reaches a Nigerian bank account in about ten seconds, and the fee out of a USDT or USDC balance is ₦50.** Nothing to move it into first.

And the chore you are meant to do before agreeing a price, which is find out what a Dollar is worth today, is one page rather than a group chat argument. The USD to Naira page carries the live rate, the EUR to Naira page does the same for clients paying in Euros, and Mular shows the Naira figure before you confirm anything.

The Case for Keeping One Anyway

I am not telling you to close anything. A domiciliary account does things no app does, and the 2026 rules made it better than it has been in years. If a client's finance team only pays by wire to a bank, you need the bank, and there is plenty to be said for a branch with a person in it when a transfer goes strange on a Friday afternoon. Most people asking this simply do not have that problem. They have the other one, where the money arrives in Dollars and the life happens in Naira.

You Never Wanted Three SIMs

You wanted one line with bars on it everywhere you went. The goal was never to collect accounts, it was to be paid in one currency and live in another without that being a weekly project with its own wahala.

So before you book the branch appointment, finish the sentence out loud. "I need a dollar account so that I can _____." If the blank is a wire going out in your name, go and open it today. If the blank is "so my money has somewhere to stay", it already has somewhere.

Hold Dollars, Pay in Naira, Skip the Referee Forms

Mular keeps your Dollars as USDT or USDC for as long as you want them there, then pays a Nigerian bank account in Naira in about ten seconds when the bill lands. No branch visit, no referee hunting, no second account for the money to pass through on its way to being useful.

Download Mular and let your money stop commuting.

As always, stay Jiggy.
Love, Mr Mular.

* The Foreign Exchange Manual 2026 details, the "unfettered and unrestricted access" wording, the $10,000 daily telegraphic transfer limit and the Form A change, come from BusinessDay, read 15 Oct 2026: https://businessday.ng/news/article/cbn-frees-personal-dollar-accounts-tightens-oversight-of-export-proceeds-in-new-fx-rules/

** Mular details as at 15 Oct 2026: funding a USDT or USDC wallet costs nothing, and paying a Nigerian bank account from that balance carries a ₦50 withdrawal fee.
