An address beginning with 0x (Ethereum, and USDT or USDC on BEP20 or Polygon) does not care either. Everything else, including Solana addresses, Bitcoin addresses starting with 1 or 3, and USDT on TRC20, should be treated as if every capital letter is part of the address. You paste it into WhatsApp to send to yourself, your keyboard sees the start of a sentence, and it helpfully turns the first letter into a capital, the way my phone does to everything (it once capitalised "ok" in a message to my landlord and I felt I owed him rent for the tone). Then you copy it back out of the chat and paste it into the send screen.

Compare that with a Nigerian account number, which is ten digits and nothing else. There is no capital 7. Autocorrect cannot touch it, and the app reads out the account name before you pay, which is why you can send to a stranger's bank account without breaking a sweat. A wallet address has letters, the letters have cases, and depending on the chain those cases mean something.

Addresses That Do Not Care About Capitals

bc1 addresses (Bitcoin SegWit). These use a format called Bech32, and its rulebook is refreshingly strict: an address must be all lowercase or all uppercase, and any wallet that follows the spec has to reject one that mixes the two.* So "Bc1q…" with your phone's capital at the front should be refused rather than sent somewhere strange.

0x addresses (Ethereum, BEP20, Polygon). These are written in hexadecimal, where the letters a to f are just numbers, and a capital A is the same number as a small a. The address does not change if you change the case. The capitals you see in a mixed-case 0x address are a checksum: a pattern that lets a wallet spot a typo, with roughly a 0.0247% chance that a random mistake slips through.** If you type it all in lowercase, the address still works, but you have quietly thrown that safety check away.

Addresses Where Every Capital Counts

Solana addresses, Bitcoin addresses starting with 1 or 3, and the T addresses USDT travels on over TRC20 are in the other camp. Solana's own documentation describes an address as 32 bytes displayed as a base58 string, and Base58 is the alphabet that settles the question. It uses the digits 1 to 9, the capital letters minus I and O, and the small letters minus l, which is 9 + 24 + 25 = 58 characters. A small a and a capital A are two different symbols in that alphabet, so they mean two different things.

0 and O, I and l were dropped because they look alike on a screen, so somebody thought about your eyesight. Nobody thought about your keyboard. Some of these formats catch most typos and some do not, so the safe rule is simple: if it does not start with bc1 or 0x, the capitals stay exactly as they arrived.

Can You Get Crypto Back If the Address Was Wrong?

Usually not, and there is no customer service line for the chain itself. If the address was malformed, a good wallet refuses to send and you lose nothing but a minute. If the change produced a different, valid address, the money goes there and stays there, which is why the only fix worth learning is the one that stops the error happening at all.

How to Avoid Case Mistakes When You Send Crypto

Never retype an address and never let it pass through a chat on the way. Copy it from the wallet it belongs to and paste it straight into the send screen. If you are receiving, open the wallet on Mular, pick the network, and copy the address the app gives you (or let the sender scan the QR code). Your USDT wallet on Mular takes deposits on ERC20, TRC20, BEP20, Polygon and Solana as at 23 Oct 2026, so the network you pick decides which address format you get.

Then do the dull part: check the first four and last four characters against the original, capitals included. If the person you are paying is also on Mular, skip the whole exercise and send to their Mular ID, which looks like @sample. No address, no capitals, nothing for your keyboard to improve.

The Capital Letter Was Never the Enemy

In a 0x address the capitals are a safety check, in a bc1 address they are one choice for the whole string, and in a Solana address they are the address. The thing to fear is the helpful step in between, the chat app or the keyboard that thinks it knows better. Keep the address away from anything that edits text, and the question in the title stops mattering.

One Wallet, Every Address Copied for You

Mular gives you a USDT wallet that takes deposits on five networks, hands you the right address for each one, and lets you pay any Nigerian bank account straight from that balance when the money lands. You can see what it is worth on the USDT to Naira page before you send a thing.

Download Mular and let your keyboard stick to messages.

As always, stay Jiggy.
Love, Mr Mular.

* The Bech32 case rules and the QR code point come from BIP-173, the Bitcoin proposal that defined the format, read 23 Oct 2026: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0173.mediawiki

** The 0x checksum and its 0.0247% figure come from EIP-55 (now ERC-55), read 23 Oct 2026: https://github.com/ethereum/ercs/blob/master/ERCS/erc-55.md

Written after a search query kept turning up on our wallet address page with no answer waiting for it, and the honest answer turned out to be three answers.

Related reading: what a wallet address actually is, and whether you can swap the whole string for a name instead.

Sometimes.
