In Nigeria that mostly means designers, developers, writers and virtual assistants whose clients abroad settle invoices in USDT or USDC (stablecoins pegged to the US Dollar, so 1 USDT is about $1). The work is the same work. What changes is the plumbing: the money arrives in minutes on any day of the week, as Dollars, with no domiciliary account queue. We covered the whole trip in how to get paid in crypto as a freelancer, which is the best place to start if this is your first crypto client.

The catch is that plumbing has more joints. Remember WAEC morning? HB pencil, eraser, photocard, calculator with a fresh battery, and your mum at the gate patting your pockets one last time. Somebody always failed Further Maths not for the formula but because the photocard was on the dining table. The work is the exam; this checklist is what you need in your pocket at the gate.

The Crypto Freelancer Checklist at a Glance

Tax ID and BVN sorted

A stablecoin to be paid in

The network agreed in writing

The address checked twice

An invoice that carries all of it

A wallet that accepts that network

A plan for where the money sits

A way to pay people in Naira

A record of every payment

Real places to find the work

Before You Take the Job: Tax ID and BVN

This is the photocard, and the box that changed most this year. Anyone doing business in virtual assets in Nigeria now has to be registered for tax, and crypto platforms ask for a valid Tax ID before they will activate an account.* If an app you used last year suddenly wants numbers it never asked for, that is why. Your BVN sits next to it, because every fintech app needs one for identity checks. If you have forgotten yours (nobody judges), here is every way to check your BVN, and your bank's USSD codes are on our bank codes page.

Before You Send the Invoice: Coin, Network, Address

Ask to be paid in a stablecoin. Bitcoin and Solana are lovely, but an invoice should still be worth the same thing on Friday that it was worth on Monday. USDT or USDC, either is fine, and if you cannot decide, we did the USDT vs USDC comparison so you do not have to.

Then agree the network, in writing, in the same thread as the invoice. "USDT" is not an address; USDT on Tron, USDT on Ethereum and USDT on Solana are three different roads, and money sent down the wrong one does not reverse. On Mular, USDT can arrive on five networks (Tron, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Solana), and USDC on the same five, so the rule is simply to give your client the address for the network you both agreed.**

Copy the address, never type it, and check the first and last few characters before you send it. Some addresses care about capital letters and some do not (we untangled that here), and that long ugly string can sometimes be replaced with a name.

The Invoice That Carries All of It

Same invoice as always, plus four lines: coin, network, wallet address and amount. Put the address on the invoice itself, not in a WhatsApp message buried under forty voice notes. Our walk-through of crypto invoicing for clients abroad has the full layout, and the free Freelance Invoice Template on Figma saves you building one from scratch. (Still mixing up invoices and receipts? Here is the difference.)

When the Money Lands: Where Does It Live?

Receiving USDT or USDC into your Mular wallet costs nothing, and the money shows up as Dollars, which raises the question most freelancers skip: do you keep it that way? That is your call (no investment advice here, and no Naira predictions either), but make it on purpose. The case for holding some income in Dollars is in USD savings vs Naira. And before you queue at a branch for a domiciliary or multi-currency account, read foreign currency accounts compared. If you are paid in USDT and spend in Naira, you probably do not need one.

When the Bills Come: Paying People in Naira

The landlord does not take USDT. Neither does the man who fixes your generator. But they do not need to. On Mular you pay any Nigerian bank account straight from your USDT or USDC balance, the Naira lands in their account in about ten seconds, and the withdrawal fee is ₦50.** Airtime, data, electricity and TV come out of the same balance, which we walked through in paying airtime and data with crypto. Before you agree a Naira price with anyone, check what your Dollars are worth today on the USDT to Naira page. No P2P stranger, no three apps, no refreshing your bank app like it owes you money.

Before March: Keep a Record of Every Payment

Here is the chore. What a client pays you in crypto counts as income, so every payment needs a date, an amount and what it was worth in Naira the day it landed. Holding the coin is not taxed, and moving it between your own wallets is not a sale.* We worked through the bands and a full example in crypto freelancer tax in Nigeria, and you should read it before your first filing season, not during it.

Although, almost forgot: Mular already keeps every one of those records. Each payment in, each swap and each transfer out sits in your history with its date and amount (swaps and Naira payments carry the rate too), and you can download it as a statement or a spreadsheet when your accountant asks. You keep the habit; the app keeps the paperwork.

Where to Find Crypto-Paying Work

Honestly, the biggest source is the client you already have: most crypto-paid freelancers just asked "can you pay in USDC?" and heard "sure". Beyond that, our guide to legit online jobs in Nigeria that pay daily lists where the work actually is, and how to become a freelancer with no experience is for anyone still on box zero. If a client insists on PayPal, this is where PayPal stands in Nigeria in 2026, and what to suggest instead.

Is It Safe?

Safe enough, if you hold two lines. Never send a deposit or "verification fee" to a client who has not paid you; real clients pay you, not the other way round. And never let anyone talk you onto a different network or address than the one on your invoice, however urgent the message sounds. Most of the sad stories in this space start with one of those two.

The Reframe

Getting paid in crypto was never the hard part. The hard part is the pocket check: the Tax ID nobody mentioned, the network nobody wrote down, the record nobody kept until March. None of it is difficult, all of it is boring, and just like WAEC morning, the people who struggle rarely lacked the material. Their photocard stayed on the dining table.

So pat your pockets. Ten boxes, one gate, and then the only thing left is the work.

Ten Boxes Ticked, One App for the Rest

Mular ticks more of this list than you would think: free USDT and USDC wallets on five networks, Naira paid to any bank account in about ten seconds, bills from the same balance, and a full history ready for tax season. Your client pays, and everything after happens in one place.

Download Mular and tick most of the list before lunch.

As always, stay Jiggy.
Love, Mr Mular.

* The Tax ID requirement for virtual asset activity, and the rules that holding crypto and moving it between your own wallets are not taxable disposals, are from the Nigeria Revenue Service's virtual asset guidelines as reported by Technext, read 27 Oct 2026: https://technext24.com/crypto/crypto-tax-nigeria-virtual-asset-framework/

** Mular details as at 27 Oct 2026: receiving USDT or USDC is free, both arrive on Tron, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Solana, and paying a Nigerian bank account from a stablecoin balance carries a ₦50 withdrawal fee.
